Type an area code or paste a phone number to see where it is and the time there right now.
Data from NANPA, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, file dated October 4, 2026. If you share a lookup, the link carries only the area code, not the phone number.
The area code is a quick first guess at where a lead is. It can be wrong, because people keep their mobile number when they move. Someone who got a 312 number in Chicago may live in Denver now, and their phone shows Denver time.
It’s the window federal rules set for telephone sales calls, in the time zone of the person you’re calling. Some states set shorter hours or ban Sunday calls. Callingly doesn’t apply state limits, so check the rules for the states you call. Callingly uses the same 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM window for Canadian and Caribbean numbers, though local rules there may differ.
Your team is in New York and gets a web lead at 8:30 AM on an October morning. The number is (270) 555-0199. Area code 270 covers western and central Kentucky, and it spans two time zones. The lookup shows 8:30 AM on Eastern Time, inside the window, and 7:30 AM on Central Time, half an hour early. At 9:00 AM in New York, both sides are inside the window.
The next lead’s number is (907) 555-0123, and it’s 9:00 AM in New York. Area code 907 is Alaska, where it’s 5:00 AM. Wait until 8:00 AM Alaska time, which is noon in New York, to call or text.
Your browser works out the current time in each zone, including daylight saving time, so the time is right on the day you look.
Many areas have more than one code. When a region runs low on numbers, a new code is added over the same area, so a 212 number and a 917 number can belong to two people on the same street in Manhattan. The card lists these codes under “Shares its area with”.
NANPA’s list gets a few of these added codes wrong. It lists 986 in Idaho as Pacific Time only, but 986 covers all of Idaho, including Boise, which is on Mountain Time. The lookup gives each added code every time zone of the area it shares.
NANPA lists the main time zones for each code, and a few places keep a different time. West Wendover, in area 775, uses Mountain Time while the rest of 775 uses Pacific Time. Area 867 shows Central, Mountain and Yukon time, and Iqaluit, in Nunavut, uses Eastern. Most of Arizona doesn’t change its clocks for daylight saving time, but the Navajo Nation, in area 928, does.
A lead who fills in your form at 9:40 PM their time is the hard case for speed to lead. They’re ready to talk now, and it’s already past 9:00 PM where they are. What you can control is whether that lead is called at the first time that works, or waits for a rep to get to it.
Callingly reads the lead’s time zone from their phone number and won’t place a call before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM there. It reads the whole number, not just the area code, and for some numbers that tells it which side of a time zone line the lead is on. For the rest, it goes by one of the code’s zones. If your account’s Lead Timezone setting gives every lead your account’s time zone instead, Callingly checks the hours there, not where the lead is.
A new sequence has the “Wait until next business hours” step on. With it on, the call goes out at the next time that’s inside both the lead’s window and your team’s hours, so nobody has to set a reminder. With it off, the sequence ends and the lead isn’t called. Numbers with no time zone, such as toll-free numbers, aren’t checked. For why the first call matters so much, see how fast you call a new lead changes everything.
25 area codes cross a time zone line:
800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are toll-free codes. They use the same 3-digit slot as an area code, but they are not tied to a place, so there is no location or local time to show.
The NANPA file this lookup uses has 454 area codes in service that belong to a place: 378 in the United States and its territories, 55 in Canada and 21 in Bermuda and the Caribbean. 5 more are assigned but not in use yet. The next is 273 in Quebec, planned for February 27, 2027.
